A Message of Hope from North of the Border

by Debbie L. Kasman in

To my American family and friends,

This is not a message of support for either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton.  It's a message of hope for everyone.

Many people see political and social turmoil as a sign of political, social, and moral decline.  It’s not.

It’s a sign of the emergence of a new and better culture.

Cultures develop through a series of stages and there is always a big shake-up when cultures move from one stage to the next.

About ten thousands years ago, humans started to do farming with simple tools and things got shaken up.  About five thousand years ago, societies began to form into major empires and things got shaken up.  About three hundred years ago the printing press was invented which caused another major shake-up.  (It led to the Age of Enlightenment in the West, slavery was brought to an end, representative democracy emerged, and it brought the rise of modern sciences.)  About fifty years ago during the 1960s, the civil rights movement and the environmental movement began, and women started fighting for equal rights, and things got shaken up again.  Starting about thirty or forty years ago, developmental psychologists started spotting the emergence of another shake-up.  For the first time ever in the history of our planet, they noticed that people were starting to become truly peaceful, inclusive, compassionate, and loving.

Developmental psychologists say currently about 5% of the world’s population is at this new developmental level.  When about 10% of the population reach this way of being, it'll create a tipping point and the impact on the world will be nothing less than shocking.  It's very possible that the clash we are seeing right now between those who support Donald Trump and those who support Hillary Clinton will help bring us to a more inclusive, more peaceful, more loving cultural level.  This is because more and more of us are beginning to see the need.  None of us want to live in a hate-filled, intolerant world.

If you want to participate in the cultural movement toward a more peaceful, inclusive, and loving world, you have to be more peaceful, loving, and inclusive yourself, and you have to learn to take different perspectives.  The more perspectives we can take, the more conscious and loving we become.  We need to listen to each other and understand what both sides are saying.  There is partial truth in both political parties and in both political camps.  We need to try to understand what Donald Trump supporters are saying.  We also need to try to understand what Hillary Clinton supporters are saying.  This is the only way we'll be able to create a more peaceful, loving, and inclusive world.

Don't argue.  Listen.  Listen to understand what the other person sees that you don't.

If you want to know what else you can do to help bring this new culture in faster, read my post How To Grow Up Between 20 and 60 Years Old.  It explains what else we each need to do to bring this new culture in faster.
